The concept of beauty in Ayurveda goes far beyond just “skin deep”. It views beauty as having 3 aspects –
– Outer beauty is what we generally associate with beauty, which relates to bone structure, skin tone and complexion, body contours, eyes, muscle development, intelligence, hair quality, youthfulness, and weight. In Ayurveda, outer beauty also includes grace in posture and movement and the subtle qualities of freshness, cheerfulness and vitality of the individual. Although many of these characteristics are genetic, beauty is still the product of general physical health and appropriate daily care, which again is a reflection of inner beauty.
– Inner beauty relates to emotional states and mental abilities. Just as we can mould the physical characteristics, we can also train our minds to cultivate positive states of being. The start of this purification and strengthening is to begin to accept who we are and truly care for and appreciate ourselves.
– Secret – the secret aspect of beauty refers to the energy, insight and inspiration it takes to balance the inner and outer aspects of beauty. Developing this special quality takes time, patience and a willingness to learn from experience.
Ayurveda teaches how to identify one’s body type and then protect it from rapid deterioration through proper diet and lifestyle. The emphasis is on self-knowledge and development of positive routines and habits that would bring out the best in oneself.
Individuals take form as a result of 3 life giving forces called “doshas”. These are the forces that orchestrate all the functions of the body, like how we look, how our metabolic processes function, how we respond, how we think, etc. It is vital that the doshas work together in harmony as an imbalance of doshas lead to physical, mental and spiritual problems. The 3 types of doshas are Vata (movement), Pitta (transformation) and Kapha (cohesion).
Based on the doshas, skin or hair can be classified as Vata, Pitta, Kapha type or a mix of 2 or 3 doshas, e.g., Vata – Pitta or Pitta – Kapha. It is important to diagnose the skin type correctly to select the right treatment.
Vata skin is Dry, rough, thin, fine pores, dark complexion, cool to touch and sensitive to climate changes. When imbalanced, there is lack of tone or luster, looseness, rough patches, chapping, wrinkles, cracking, dry rashes, corns or eczema.
Pitta skin is fair, coppery or pinkish complexion, sensitive with moles and freckles, soft, moist or slightly oily and warm. People with Pitta skin are more prone to inflammation, rashes, redness, oily T-zone, premature wrinkling, yellow pustular acne or burning sensation of skin.
Kapha skin is thick, moist, soft, cool, well toned and with either pale or whitish complexion. When imbalanced they are prone to dull, sluggish, congested skin with enlarged pores, oily skin, large white pustular acne or cyst formation, blackheads and whiteheads and sagging of skin.
